High-fired coloured glaze
ware, first developed in the Song dynasty, is one of the four major
traditional ceramic products in Jingdezhen. It came to its prime period
in the Qing Dynasty. Jingdezhen is the most renowned place in China for
the production of coloured glaze ware in terms of history, variety,
quality and artistic merit. Various metal oxides and natural ores are
used as colouring agents for the preparation of high temperature colored
glazes.
This
glaze is applied on the green clay bodies that are then high fired in a
kiln. So far many charming colored glaze wares have been developed i.e.,
bright and eye-catching red glazes, simple but elegant blue or green
glazes, mottled fancy glazes of classic beauty and so on. That is why
this type of glazed porcelain is also called "Man-made Precious
Stone" by the people. Among varies coloured glaze wares, the most
treasured types are Jun Red, Sacrificial Red, Sacrificial Red and San
Yang KaiTai (three colours mixed).
Sacrificial
Red Glaze is a type of very pleasing and eye-catching red glaze using
copper as colouring agent. this in also a deep but seems to have a
slightly purple ting in it. It originated in the Yongle reign during the
Ming Dynasty. It is called "Sacrificial Red" or "Altar
Red" because of its royal use for sacrificial utensil.
